Le dernier éléphant naturel d’Afrique vient de s’éteindre en Tanzanie | 19/02/2055

415 000 en 2020, 117 000 en 2030, 43 000 en 2040, 11000 en 2045… L’éléphant a progressivement disparu, d’abord d’Asie en 2038, puis, victime de la destruction de son habitat et du braconnage, en Afrique. La population de pachydermes a drastiquement baissé en 2048, où seuls 147 éléphants survivants ont pu être préservés. Mais malheureusement leurs conditions de vie et, d’après les spécialistes, leur état psychique proche de la dépression humaine n’ont pas permis de sauver le troupeau, dont le dernier spécimen naturel vient de s’éteindre.

Malgré les efforts des associations de protection de la Nature et les moyens considérables de l’UNESCO, l’année 2055 aura ainsi tristement connu la disparition de plusieurs espèces emblématiques de notre planète, dont le rhinocéros, l’ornithorynque, le paresseux et donc désormais l’éléphant.
« Ces animaux étaient tous inscrits au catalogue du Patrimoine de l’Humanité de l’UNESCO depuis 2025. Mais il ne pas suffit pas de reconnaître un patrimoine pour le sauver, il faut aussi le protéger… Nous avons échoué… C’est une perte incommensurable que nous subissons ici. Notre biodiversité s’effondre petit à petit. Il faut que l’humanité prenne conscience de ces faits… Nous sommes nous-même en danger de mort… » a déclaré Pol-Henry Chang, porte-parole de l’UNESCO, encore bouleversé par cette triste nouvelle.

L’inscription du « Vivant » au catalogue du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO était pourtant le signe d’une réelle reconnaissance de ce patrimoine spécifique. Cette reconnaissance impliquait sa protection par tous les moyens. Jusque dans les années 20, la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO se consacrait essentiellement à tous les domaines de la culture, qu’ils soient naturels ou historiques, qu’ils soient matériels ou immatériels. On y vit les pyramides de Guizeh, en Egypte, comme le quartier Saint Jean à Lyon, en France, ou le parc du Yellowstone, aux USA, et encore les Falaises de Bandiagara, au Mali. A cette liste furent ajoutés la cuisine française, des danses traditionnelles tribales ou des langues dont le nombre de vocalisateurs s’effondrait…

Mais conséquence des bouleversements climatiques des dernières décennies, en 2025, l’UNESCO ouvrait son catalogue au monde du vivant ; trop d’espèces végétales ou animales disparaissaient… L’exploration des derniers territoires vierges (grands fonds océaniques, lacs souterrains millénaires aux pôles de la planète, grottes scellées depuis des millions d’années découvertes grâce aux dernières améliorations technologiques…) ne faisait qu’augmenter la liste des espèces mises en danger par l’expansion des activités humaines et de la biologie dominante.

Au début des années 30, les semences et génotypes de tous les végétaux protégés ou disparus ont été stockés dans la réserve mondiale du Svalbard dans l’île du Spitzberg en Norvège. Tandis que le matériel génétique de toutes les espèces animales protégées ont été stockées dans une banque internationale du génome animal, la fameuse G-Bank, implantée en Antarctique, entre les bases Casey et Davis.

Depuis, les séquenceurs génétiques tournent à plein régime, 24 heures sur 24, pour « enregistrer » le maximum de matériel génétique possible avant dégradation. La deuxième étape de cette sauvegarde technocentrée a pris la forme de programmes de clonages : ils ont été déclenchés dès que le nombre d’individus d’une espèce atteignait un seuil d’alerte. L’idée qui dominait à l’époque était que l’on pouvait remplacer les animaux disparus par des clones qui eux-mêmes se reproduiraient naturellement avec le temps. Malheureusement les différents laboratoires chargés de ces clonages n’auraient pas tous respecté la charte de bioéthique établie en 2025 qui stipulait clairement la non-manipulation génétique des clones et l’élimination des sujets non-viables ou non-identiques. On a vu ainsi naître dans des fermes spécialisées des crocodiles de 15m, des vaches de 3 tonnes ou même des éléphants aux défenses démesurées… Les laboratoires concernés ont plaidés l’accident « une mauvaise interprétation des algorithmes de sélection » et promis des ajustements techniques pour éviter des accidents génétiques comme le LOS, « Large Offspring Syndrome », qui provoque des déformations et altérations physiologiques sur certains animaux clonés, notamment le gigantisme.

A l’époque, l’UNESCO et les associations de protection de la nature ont criés au scandale, « De qui se moque t-on ? Des cochons de la taille d’une voiture ou des Zibelines grosses comme des tigres ! Ne voit-on pas l’intérêt financier d’un tel accident ? » avait déclaré Obama Smith, le secrétaire général du WWF avant d’appeler à l’organisation d’un sommet mondial sur la conservation des espèces et l’établissement d’une autorité capable de réglementer fermement le clonage. Ce qui fut fait lors d’un sommet extraordinaire organisé à Sydney en 2037 avec la création de la CAPIA, la Cloned Animals Protection International Autority.

De qui se moque t-on ? Des cochons de la taille d’une voiture ou des Zibelines grosses comme des tigres ! Ne voit-on pas l’intérêt financier d’un tel accident ?

A la suite de quoi, le clonage fut sévèrement encadré dès 2038, mais le temps perdu ne fut jamais retrouvé, certaines espèces avaient totalement disparues rendant impossible la réplication exacte d’un individu animal, puisqu’il ne disposait plus de l’apprentissage de ses congénères, provoquant souvent une inadaptation à la vie sauvage telle que ses ancêtres l’ont connue et entraînant des comportements anormaux pour son espèce. Autre perte : pour les mammifères, quand la dernière femelle meure, on perd aussi son utérus. Un clone devra alors être implanté dans l’utérus d’une femelle d’une espèce voisine ou dans un utérus artificiel…

Dans le cas précis des éléphants d’Afrique, certains clones avaient déjà été introduits avant la disparition de leur dernier ancêtre naturel, mais aucun ne s’est pour l’instant reproduit de façon normale. « Leurs comportements social et sauvage est tout à fait anormal, certains individus clonés ont pourtant vécu plus de 10 ans avec des spécimens naturels, mais étrangement, ils ne se reproduisent pas naturellement, ni ne se nourrissent convenablement… Ils semblent tous déprimés » a expliqué le Pr Souleiman, responsable de la réserve de Selous en Nouvelle-Tanzanie.

A travers les réseaux sociaux, de nombreuses voix s’élèvent aujourd’hui, solidaires du sort des pachydermes « le blues de l’éléphant nous concerne tous » déclarent-ils.
